In Crown Office directed investigations the Commissioner is not authorised, in terms of Section 43 (8) of the Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2006 as amended by the Police & Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012, to publish her report. 

Where the Commissioner conducts an investigation following a referral from the Chief Constable or from another policing body operating in Scotland, the legislation permits the Commissioner to publish her conclusions unless criminal proceedings are still in contemplation.

Where the Commissioner conducts an investigation following a referral from the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) regarding misconduct by a senior officer of the rank of ACC and above, the Commissioner is not authorised to publish her report.

    PIRC investigation - death of a 36 year old female in Clermiston Woods in Edinburgh

    Police Scotland has referred an incident to the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner for investigation following the death of a 36 year old woman who was found in Clermiston Woods, Edinburgh on 30 June 2013. In the days prior to her death the woman had contact with officers from Police Scotland.

    PIRC investigation - incident involving 39 year old male in Leith

    Police Scotland has referred an incident to the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner for consideration following police contact with a male (39) who an hour and a half after their departure fell from the 7th floor of a block of flats in Leith.

    Following the death in Paisley of Antony Storrie (25) on 30 June 2013, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to his death.

    Taser use "proportionate and justified" against 15 year old boy with knife

    The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) has found that police were justified in using a baton round and taser to disarm a 15 year old boy who was threatening both himself and officers. In a report issued today to the Chief Constable and the Scottish Police Authority the Commissioner concludes that the use of the baton round and taser was "proportionate and justified".

    PIRC investigation - road traffic accident on A92 on 2 June 2013

    Following an incident on Sunday 2 June involving a 39 year old male pedestrian and a vehicle on the A92 Arbroath to Carnoustie road, the Police Service of Scotland referred the matter the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner. In its independent investigation report published on 14 August 2013, the PIRC is critical of Police Scotland's management and response to various incidents leading up to and following the serious road accident near Arbroath in June this year.

    PIRC investigation - road traffic accident in Dunfermline

    Following a road traffic accident involving a marked police vehicle and a car at 14.48 on Wednesday 15 May 2013 at Halbeath Road, Dunfermline at its junction with Lambert Drive, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service referred the matter to the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner. A report has been submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

    Following the death of a male aged 30 on 6 May 2013 on the Great Northern Road in Aberdeen, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to his death. A report has been submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
